Person 1, Kindness 26

Sarah York of Tacoma, Washington spent her 26th birthday doing 26 random acts of kindness around town. Her log of the acts on Facebook are almost as good as what she learned from the reactions.  Read the details in the One day, 26 acts of kindness story at Komo News.

Doing kind acts many times does more for the doer than the receivers.  Try it today and see.

At least 1,500 years until next ice age

Even though movies like The Day After Tomorrow scare us about a pending ice age that can strike in weeks, the scientist believe it will not happen for at least another 1,500 years and should take two to three years to set in.  Learn more in the Next ice age not likely before 1,500 years: study at Reuters.

The big question is: how can global warming cause an ice age?  It does not make sense – heat does not cause cold.  But, the complexity of earth’s environment provides a way for it to happen.  The theory is that global warming will melt Arctic ice and the resulting fresh water will disrupt the ocean’s Gulf Stream, which warms the northern Atlantic.  Find out more at How Global Warming May Cause the Next Ice Age at Common Dreams.

Believe: Tebow wins with 316 passing yards

The big question is – would God really favor one football team? He seems to as Tim Tebow put up 316 passing yards yesterday to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL wild card playoff game in “Mile High” stadium.

The 316 yards matches an often quoted Gospel passage John 3:16 which reads, “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die, but have eternal life.”

I watched most of the game on TV and caught a glimpse of a sign held by a Denver fan which read “Believe, Believe, Believe” and Denver fans are believing today. I mean, what are the chances? Going into overtime, Tebow needed 80 yards passing to reach the 316 number and got it in one strike to Demaryius Thomas to seal the win.

Look out New England Patriots, you never know what God has in store this Saturday.

Warren Buffett to sing at Chinese New Year

Warren Buffet, the investment guru, is to sing by video during China’s Spring Festival gala that kicks off the Chinese New Year on January 23rd.  Who thought he could sing and play guitar?  Read the whole Warren Buffett to perform for China over Chinese New Year story at Reuters.

It is interesting that we place people into one category and forget they are so much more.  Warren is a husband, a father, a grandfather, plays bridge, follows Nebraska football, and I am sure many other great things besides an investment guru. From the “Personal life” section about Warren Buffett at Wikipedia.

Curbing Racy Entertainment in China

President Hu Jintao reduces the number of racy programs in China, focusing instead on shows that “promote traditional virtues and socialist core value.”  It seems China is experiencing the temptations Jesus warned us about 2000 years ago.  The question is if this is from the “westernization” President Hu warns about or a generational difference, the president is 69.  Read the full China claims success in curbing racy entertainment story at Reuters.

The world is becoming a small village

It is amazing what a small village the world has become. I found a story about people reflecting on the kindnesses they received this year in the village of Yellow Springs. I guess the word-association made me think I was reading about a village near Yellowstone National Park. Once I finished, I looked up Yellow Springs and it is in Ohio. Their reflections on the past year could be written in any city, town or village around the globe. See for yourself by reading the Acts of kindness the whole year long story at the Yellow Spring News.

Happy New Year to you and your family! I wish everyone good health and prosperity in 2012. God bless you one and all!

Russian Ship Freed in Antarctic

What a great story about world cooperation – the New Zealand air force dropped supplies and equipment to a stranded Russian ship in the Antarctic ice pack, a Korean ice breaker created a lane for the ship to reach open water, and on top of it the Russian ship held a crew of Russians, Indonesians, and Ukrainians.  Read the full Russian ship repaired and freed from Antarctic ice story at Reuters.
